| During the 1990s I photographed
Yellowstone National Park on more than a dozen occasions, and passed this small lake on
numerous occasions on my way to Lamar Valley. I was always on the lookout for wildlife
subjects around water, but the features of the lake and its surroundings never seemed
striking enough to make me want to stop for a landscape photograph. All that changed one afternoon in early June. Rounding a bend in the road the sight of the sunlit lone tree against dark stormy sky was so striking my car came to a screeching halt. The lush green stalks of grass at the water's edge literally glowed against dark calm water. I made a series of quick exposures with the 28-70mm lens and ran back to the car for the 24mm to show more of the grassy foreground. A very ordinary scene was transformed by magical light into one of my all-time favorite Yellowstone landscape photographs. On subsequent visits I usually slowed down to look for this lake with lone tree. More often than not, however, I would drive right by without even spotting this location. It goes to show how much our perception is influenced by the quality of light. |
