Wolf and Pup, Yellowstone River, Wyoming

Canon Rebel XTi
Canon 500 mm lens
Canon 1.4X T/C

This image was made on my visit to Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 2007. You can read more about the visit in this
article. This was my first opportunity to photograph wolves in Yellowstone, and hundreds of images were exposed during an exciting 2-hour period on our last evening in the Park.

Not only is this my favorite image of the wolves, but it's also the most memorable because I didn't come across it until about 3 months after the trip.

As this pair of wolves headed toward the river's edge and started drinking, my memory card filled up, and after a hurried card change, I was able to expose about 10 more frames during the drinking sequence. I like this image the most because the pup's attention was drawn to the passing duck. In the excitement of the moment I had misplaced this particular card and didn't find it again until 3 months later when I was preparing to head back to Yellowstone for the Fall elk rut. It was far better than finding money in an old pair of jeans.
